party like it’s 2012

Reflection of 2011 and resolutions for 2012 is upon us with the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebration. It’s been a wonderful year for my family and me and I can only hope 2012 is filled with as much laughter, joy and good memories as 2011 blessed us with.

Start the year off with a fabulous party…with shades of pink and gold. Here are some fun ideas to add to your New Year’s Eve shindig. Now you just have to decide…who’s the lucky lad {or lady} you’re gonna kiss at midnight?

DIY Gold Mason Jars: We have serious mason jar love. These DIY spray painted gold mason jars are the perfect vase for pink flowers or pink-and-white-striped straw holder for your New Year’s Eve bash. Directions for how to spray paint can be found at 100 Layer Cake.

Strawberry Champagne Sparkler Cupcakes: When I saw these on Oprah several years ago, I just knew I had to include them on my next New Year’s Eve menu. So festive with the indoor-safe sparkler candle, and who doesn’t love the combination of cupcakes, champagne, strawberries and chocolate! Sign me up for one {or two of these}. 2012 Sign: Love the idea of adding a 2012 sign at your party made of wooden numbers covered in gold or pink coins or sequins like the LOVE sign above. It can be a DIY project that is sure to impress. 

Shiny Centerpiece: Crate a glimmering centerpiece by sprinkling pink or gold oversized sequins between two cylinders and nestle a votive candle inside. Visit Martha Stewart to see where her team found the products to create this shimmering look. Or, add gold ornaments to glass vases and flutes in varying styles, and cluster them on a cake stand to craft a truly stunning and effortless centerpiece just like Martha Stewart did here.

Wall Decor: Use shimmering gold paper {leftover from Christmas would make this a budget-friendly project} to make streamers like this. Or, hang pink accordion circles above your dessert table and modify them by turning them into New Year’s Eve clocks. This great idea and how-to details can be found at Fiskars. For champagne-like wall decor, add different sized gold and clear balloons to the wall above the champagne table to create the bubbly effect on the wall.

Champagne: You must have champagne when you throw a New Year’s Eve party, but spruce it up a bit this year with fun and cold {just like the air outside} popsicles to serve up fancy frozen fruit pops. Don’t forget a splash of Prosecco for a colorful and unique drink display. Add sticker numbers to each glass for an official countdown beginning with 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1!

Dessert: In addition to the Strawberry Champagne Sparkler Cupcakes, make smore’s with a dusting of gold edible sprinkles. More gold inspiration found at The Cake Blog. And, you will really wow your guests with homemade fortunes. Give your guests something to talk about and look forward to with homemade fortunes {all positive of course} using your favorite quotes. Favors: Give your guests a mini bottle of champagne in a bucket with a straw so it can be iced all night and passed out before midnight. Chris from Celebrations at Home has some great ideas to decorate the bucket.

simple elegance

Gorgeous couple. Adorable ring bearer. Serious Etsy love. Chevron. Succulents. Mountain setting. Oh my goodness, you are going to love this wedding! I instantly loved their color scheme, the billy balls and chevron napkins and pillows. The simplistic yet elegant details of this wedding mesh beautifully with the natural Colorado setting. 

Lauri Davis and Jeff O’Brien were married on September 3, 2011 during Labor Day weekend. It’s a beautiful time of year in Colorado with warm days and cool nights, and the couple wanted to celebrate it during a holiday weekend so 48  of their family and close friends could stay longer to celebrate with them. They said “I do” in a picturesque mountain setting on a manicured driving range at Red Sky Ranch {Jeff is a hang glider pilot on the US team, and his local launch was in direct view across the canyon}. Dinner and dancing followed on a covered patio at Summer Thyme Restaurant at Red Sky Ranch Guest Clubhouse in Wolcott, Colorado.

Lauri’s inspiration: Jeff and I love mid-century modern everything…we love the architecture of that time, we love the furniture styling and we love funky artwork that’s graffiti-like. When it came time to plan our wedding, we knew we would want to incorporate our style of modernism, simplicity and elegance.

We had both been married before and since we’re in our mid-30’s we knew we did not need a huge wedding. We wanted it to be a tight affair with family, the closest childhood friends, and our local crew. A manageable group we could spend focused time with and enjoy personal interaction. Jeff’s best friend married Lauri and Jeff, and her brother stood as her man of honor and Jeff’s sister as his best woman. Unconventional, yet meaningful.

When it came time to find a dress, I knew I wanted a Nicole Miller dress. Nicole Miller dresses flow simply, fit perfectly and can be used for outdoor or indoor weddings. They also don’t break the bank! Since Jeff and I are non-traditional, he wanted to enjoy the dress shopping process with me. Jeff had a blast and the first dress I tried on we ended up loving the most! It had art-deco styling / slimming with great texture pleats and a simple short train. I accessorized my dress with diamond stud earrings and three jeweled pins for my hair. Since we live two hours from Denver, we would go together to dress fittings and make it a date night while in the city. Jeff enjoyed seeing me in my dress multiple times and was even the one who learned how to bustle it on the wedding day. It was hilarious!

The ceremony in Lauri’s words…Keeping with an intimate sentiment, we positioned our guest’s chairs closely in a half circle around us. The center aisle was tight, allowing us to reach out and grab the hands of friends during the procession. We had ambient acoustic guitar music before and after the ceremony. We wrote our ceremony and vows and incorporated our memorized “mantra” or “prayer” we say to one another spontaneously at bed time some evenings.

It was important to incorporate my three and a half year old son into the ceremony. He wore a suit that matched Jeff’s and walked me down the aisle with my Father. It was ineffably cute and meant the world to me.

Red Sky Ranch displays gorgeous flowers during the summertime so I knew I wouldn’t have to worry about dressing up the venue with more flowers. It’s a high desert climate therefore succulents grow wild and plenty. I thought it would be awesome to do succulents in my centerpieces and bridal bouquet to pick up on the natural setting that surrounded us. I searched to find a wedding motif on the internet with the same color sequence I had in mind along with incorporating modernism, a mid-century location and succulents! I thought it was perfect. I took a few borrowed ideas and incorporated them into my big day.

I loved the simple centerpieces with grey colored concrete vessels and incorporating the succulents and yellow billy balls into the displays. I found grey vessels on Etsy.com and the white vases from Ikea. The florist fabricated beautiful replicas of what I’d found and the floral details were stunning. Pink Monkey made yellow chevron patterned dinner napkins to make the floral accents pop! The yellow chevron was also in my invitation suite. We continued the yellow chevron theme with pillows that were placed on the lounge couches. It was eye-catching to have matching elements around the room.

Pink Monkey brought in white couches with ottomans, candles, lights, white high top tables, custom-made pillows and cool accents to make their space reception cool and relaxed.

Continuing with the non-traditional, Lauri and Jeff had a local cupcake creationist deliver dozens of different flavored custom cupcakes. Lauri said she struggled to find the right way to display the desserts, then found vintage raised cake plates on Etsy and ordered about ten different size plates all different heights which added a lot of dimension and a bit of vintage flair to the presentation.

The food was exceptionally savory…for dinner guests were served a candied walnut blue cheese salad and had a choice of seared halibut over lobster hash or a sirloin steak with potatoes for their entrée. The Food and Beverage team surprised us with late night mini burgers to keep the dancing fueled, and the DJ kept the floor filled by playing a detailed list of a couple hundred of our favorite songs. Music was a key component for us, so we made sure the DJ had intimate knowledge of our taste in tunes.

Our first dance was to a Latin salsa song that is sultry and romantic. We decided a few months prior that we’d take salsa lessons and surprise our guests with a close, choreographed dance to a passionate, untraditional song. We practiced often and every night for the last week up until the wedding day! When it came time for the first dance, we just laughed and had fun. Our parents said this was the highlight of the wedding night.

The couple chartered voluntary van rides for their guests on their way home, which encouraged a festive reception without the danger of driving home after one too many.

back to school

I remember the rush of trying to read my summer reading list in one week {before the first day of school}, the anxiety of seeing my crush on the first day, the stress of picking out the perfect outfit, posing for my mom’s annual first day of school photo shoot in the front yard and the sadness that endless summer days were over.

I am still so thankful my school days are over. I still have nightmares I can’t find my locker or I show up naked to school!

But, maybe had I been invited {or hosted} a Back to School party, I would’ve been more excited to go back to school. I want to throw one just for the heck of it these ideas are so cute!

adorable diy cake stands

When I first saw these DIY cake stands, I just knew I had to make them. There was a warning from the creative inventor, Jennie from A Well Crafted Party, that whoever tries to make one will be addicted and just have to make more. She was right. I admit, I’m addicted. Now you can be too. Thanks, Jennie.

DIY Cake Stand Tutorial, featured at Bump Smitten.

Materials:
1 plate— 4-inch plates make great cupcake stands
1 candle stick, goblet or sundae glass
Epoxy
1 heavy book
1 can of spray paint
1 can of acrylic sealant {I skipped this step due to time}

Instructions:
1. Spray paint your candle stick, goblet or sundae cup the color you wish the base of your cake stand to be.
2. Find your plate—any plate will work {square or round} but I recommend using one that has the color or image you would like as this will not be painted to keep the cake stand food friendly.
3. Affix the plate to a candle stick, goblet or sundae cup {the larger the base, the more sturdy the cake stand} using a glue made for ceramics and glass.
4. Place a heavy book on top of the stand and let the epoxy set according to directions. After the epoxy has set you should be able to pick up the stand with no movement from the candlestick or plate.
5. Before use, wash the top of the plate with dish soap and water. The stand is not dishwasher safe but is food-friendly as long as food is not touching the painted surfaces.

give us some more s’mores, please

 Toasted, gooey marshmallow goodness combined with rich, decadent chocolate squished between two, crisp honey graham crackers. Yummy. My mouth is watering for a s’more as I type!

The summer-time favorite  can be prepared and styled so many different ways –  whether your hosting a fancy wedding or a backyard BBQ, you can never go wrong with a s’more. Your guests will be saying, “give us some more s’mores please!”

S’more Favors

S’more Cupcakes
{recipe by Pizzazzerie}

Ingredients
Crumbs
6 graham cracker boards (oblongs)
2 Tbsp each sugar and melted butter
1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips

Cupcakes
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
2 large eggs
1/2 cup each canola oil and water
1 Tbsp vanilla extract

Frosting
8 large egg whites
2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Directions
Heat oven to 350ºF. Line 24 muffin cups with paper liners.

Crumbs: Process graham crackers in food processor until fine crumbs. Add sugar and butter; pulse until blended. Spoon about 2 tsp into each muffin cup. Top with 1 tsp mini chocolate chips.

Cupcakes: In large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt until blended. In medium bowl, whisk buttermilk, eggs, oil, water and vanilla until blended; whisk into flour mixture until smooth.

Spoon about 1/4 cup batter into each muffin cup. Bake 20 to 25 minutes until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool completely.

Place egg whites, sugar, and cream of tartar in the heat-proof bowl of an electric mixer. Set over a saucepan with simmering water. Whisk constantly until sugar is dissolved and whites are warm to the touch, 3 to 4 minutes.

Transfer bowl to electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, and beat, starting on low speed, gradually increasing to high, until stiff, glossy peaks form, 5 to 7 minutes. Add vanilla, and mix until combined. Use immediately.

Top cupcakes with marshmallow frosting and garnish with chocolate bar and extra graham cracker crumbs!

Wash it all down with a
S’more Martini
{recipe by The Daily Find}

 2 Ounces Chocolate Vodka
2 Ounces Bailey’s Irish Cream
2 Ounces Cream de Cacao
2 Ounces Vanilla Vodka
2 Ounces Heavy Cream
Graham Crackers, Crushed
Chocolate Syrup
12 toasted mini marshmallows or 4 large marshmallows

Dip the rim of 4 martini glasses in the chocolate syrup and then into the crushed graham crackers. Chill glasses in the freezer. Pour all the remaining ingredients except the marshmallows into a martini shaker filled with ice and shake until well blended. Skewer your marshmallows on a cocktail stick and place in the chilled glasses. Strain the drinks into the 4 glasses.
