Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle DIY Halloween Costumes

One of our kids favorite movies for the past couple of years is Jumanji. We love the Robin Williams original version, so it was a hard one to beat, but the new versions of the cursed game did not disappoint. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and Jumaji: The Next Level feature a new cast of characters that get sucked into a video game where they transform into their avatar characters (with different strengths and weaknesses); as opposed to Williams movie where the game came to life on a board game with the roll of a dice. If you haven’t seen the movies, we highly recommend them! Our kids love them, and we laugh every.single.time we watch them. Since we have nothing but love for the jungle adventure movie, our kids jumped with excitement when we mentioned DIY Jumanji halloween costumes for 2020.

As you know, we love costumes that have items of normal clothing that can be re-worn (even better when we already own it), and Jessica always has to have a DIY element. Groups costumes are getting harder and harder with our kids getting older and more opinionated, but we would love for the tradition to continue as long as our kids will go for it. In the past, we dove under the sea with a DIY diver costume, DIY jellyfish (one of our all-time faves) and Deadliest Catch fisherman. Next, we ventured into the magical world of Harry Potter. And, who can forget the colorful world of the Dreamworks DIY Troll costume. Last year, we went a little dark with our glorious DIY Maleficent.

This year, welcome to the jungle! You have plenty of time to get this costume together – it can totally be done now, or last-minute is more your thing. Here’s how we did it…

Ruby Roundhouse
Army cargo pants: Walmart $12
Gloves: $1 Walmart gloves, and cut tips
Maroon top: Target $8
Combat boots: Target $24 (we had these already)
Old school boombox: We made this with a recycled shoe box, black paint, clay buttons, and chair floor protectors
Harness: DIY, folded black duct tape
Utility belt: Amazon, $13 (you can use one or two of the pockets for the other costumes)

We used brown and copper paint to paint the box, the texture on the box is made with a hot glue gun – we traced the name of the game and the design on front from an online print out and then painted the glue copper. DIY No-Sew Maleficent Costume

We love Maleficent around here, especially our girls. We still haven’t seen Maleficent, Mistress of Evil, and can’t wait to watch it. When Jessica’s daughter said she wanted a homemade Maleficent costume, we were a little hesitant because it looks intimidating, but after we shopped around and got creative without a sewing machine, and with plenty of duck tape, and a trip to Target and the vet’s office, it all worked out magnificently.

We know Halloween is less than one week away, but this can easily be done within one day, maybe two for the paint to dry! You can do it!! If not this year, put it in the files for next year. We may have the horns you can borrow. wink wink

You’ll Need:

black duct tape
sparkly duct tape
Girls Sparkly Maxi Skirt, Target
Girls Lida Fashion Boots, Target
Danskin, long sleeve leotard, Walmart
dog collar (local vet)
black head band
Speedo Silicone swim cap, Amazon
small Maleficent horns (base that you can build upon) under $8, Walmart
Black, feather angel wings
paper mache materials: newspaper, flour and water
Crayola Model Magic
Glitterific Plaid Paint, Michaels or Walmart
hot glue gun and/or Gorilla Glue

Directions:

Costume
The best part about the top, skirt and shoes is that you can wear all year-long! I hate buying costumes that are worn once, and never re-worn. Now that my kids are older, they don’t dress up like they use to, so I like buying everyday clothes that can be transformed into a costume. Most of her outfit is from the Girls Cat and Jack line from Target.

Maleficent Horns
Cut 5 to 6 inch strips of duct tape. Begin to wrap around the small Maleficent horns. You will just wrap and wrap until you build a larger size. Maintain the shape of the original horns, but this step will make them thicker. You don’t want them too big, or it will be top heavy. But, they need to be somewhat large for effect. Once the horns are set, add hot glue to the bottom of them, and glue to the headband. Now, begin to wrap duct tape around the base of the horns and the headband. Wrap, wrap and wrap some more, until the horns and sturdy on the headband and it looks like one unit. When it’s done, put on the swim cap, and then add the headband/horns.

Maleficent Staff
This was a really fun prop to make. We got messy, and it kept the kids entertained. We found a stick outside, but it was just too small, and didn’t have much texture. So, we texturized it with newspaper and paper mache. We cut small strips of newspaper, and once we had our “glue” or flour and water mixture (1 part flour, 1 part water), we dipped the strips in the mixture, slid off the excess with our fingers, and wrapped it around the stick. We made some parts bumpy by twisting the newspaper, and other parts smooth by wrapping it tight. At the top, we tried to create a little “nest” effect for the green, glowing magic stone. You can do whatever you want with the paper mache, which is the beauty of it. We let it dry for two days, then spray painted it black.

As for the green “stone,” roll Model Magic into a stone shape (basically a tall ball with a flat bottom). Then, paint it green, and once that paint is dry, paint a layer of Glitterific Plaid Paint. To glue it on, I used hot glue on some parts, but wasn’t sure if it would hold, so used Gorilla Glue as well.

Maleficent Collar
This was a tricky one, until Jodi mentioned a dog collar. Luckily I have an amazing friend (that’s you, Atlanta), and she dropped off dog collars for me to get creative with. We tried cutting it exactly like Maleficent, but it didn’t maintain it’s dramatic shape as much, so we kept it as is. We lined it with pieces of black duct tape (for color, and to soften it against the skin), and sparkly duct tape. It works great!!

Other props
Find a crow at a local store. They are everywhere this time of year. We found the wings at Michaels. But, we’ve seen them at Amazon, Spirit Halloween and Walmart.

DIY Halloween Costume Ideas

We are still working on our Halloween costumes this year, so look out for that. They are on the villain-side of the character world, but the kids are excited! We have had some great past Halloween costumes, and unfortunately not enough time for full tutorials. Hopefully this helps give you some Halloween DIY costume inspiration. You don’t need to know how to sew, or own a sewing machine. You can do it!

Oh, and please excuse the poor quality of the photos – an old iphone, inexperience behind the camera and rushing from Halloween party to Halloween party to blame! Stay tuned all the way to the bottom of this post, because if none of our costumes meet your fancy, we’ve listed some other fantastic ideas!

TROLLS HALLOWEEN COSTUME

You can get all the details about how to make our DIY Trolls costume on the blog post here. This was one of my favorites. We used a lot of regular clothes (that the kids wore all year-long) and felt. The second Trolls movie is coming to theaters this November, so it’s a great time to dress like our favorites; Branch, happy Poppy and all their colorful friends.

HARRY POTTER HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

Our kids are big Harry Potter fans. With two boys and a girl, Jessica’s had the perfect trio of Harry, Hermione and Ron Weasley. We pulled these costumes together easily, and the kids still play with the robes, wands and magic spell books. Details below…

Buy the Harry Potter robe at Nordstrom Rack for less than $25, or here. To make the wands, find sticks in the backyard. Use hot glue to add layers, vines, and texture to the stick. Once dry, paint the sticks copper or brown. We used plaid paint for this.
You can easily find ties for Harry Potter costumes, but we’re suckers for anything DIY, plus we didn’t want to spend anymore money on this costume. So, we used felt and cut it to look like a tie with stripes. We used hot glue to stick it to a hair clip, and then clipped it onto the white shirt.
The spell book is a must because every wizard needs his/her spells. Again, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on this, so I bought a journal with kraft color pages, painted the cover and binding a maroon color (with acrylic paint), and then used gold vinyl to add names, and a title of the spell book. I used my Silhouette for this, but you can buy a gold metallic sharpie to write the info on the cover of the book. I went the extra mile on this one, and wrote some of the famous Harry Potter spells in it. The kids LOVED it!

DEEP-SEA THEMED HALLOWEEN COSTUMES: JELLYFISH, DEADLIEST CATCH FISHERMAN & DEEP SEA DIVER

Our kids were really into all-things ocean one year, so we decided on a deep-sea theme. Jessica’s oldest was a fisherman from the show Deadliest Catch. Her daughter was a jellyfish with glowing lights, and her youngest was a deep-sea diver. All of them are no-sew, and fun to make! Looks at those cute smurfs, too! Details below…

Deadliest Catch Crab Fisherman: This one is so easy! We cut out paper crabs to place in the bucket with the netting. Also, for the hat, we bought it online, and then added the name of a ship to it with a fabric pen, so we knew his “ship crew.” Other pieces bought here: orange bib or this one | net |
Jellyfish: Buy an umbrella and tape and hot glue paper streamers, lights, mesh tubes and ribbon all along the inside and around the edge. Make sure the lights are battery operated and light enough to tape in the umbrella. For the outfit, you can find clothing here: metallic leggings | white or silver tulle or ruffled skirt | shite long sleeve shirt | clear umbrella | blue twinkle lights | mesh tubes |
Deep Sea Diver: My little swimmer loved to dress up like a diver. We bought him tight black pants and a long sleeve shirt (like long underwear tight), used a ski mask to cover his head, and the DIY piece was with the oxygen tanks. First, spray paint two liter bottles. Once dry, tape them together with electrical tape, and glue them together in the back. You can add straps with rope so he/she can wear like a backpack. For a belt of supplies, use black electrical tape (make sure it’s double-sided so it doesn’t stick, and add velcro to the ends so it can be easily put on and removed as a belt), and snap sponge curlers through it. We used our swim goggles and snorkels for extra props. Also, I used black tubing from Home Depot, inserted it into one of the bottles (glued it to the bottom), and attached a water bottle top to the end of it, and it was his mouth-piece. Sorry I don’t have a close-up photo!

DIY Halloween Tee: Witchful Thinking

It’s wishful thinking to think that we will dress up every year on Halloween. It can be fun, but it’s not our most favorite holiday to celebrate, so we typically don’t dress up. We dress the kids cute and call it good. Our favorite part about the holiday is celebrating at our aunt and uncle’s house. The party is loud, the food is good, the homemade costumes rock and the laughter echoes throughout the house. We love a good tradition that is carried on for generations…don’t you?

If you semi-like Halloween, don’t care for it at all, or have a party to go to but don’t want to dress up, this DIY semi-costume is for you. It’s a last-minute, really easy DIY tee that can be made in less than 10 minutes. Procrastinators, you got this!

This Witchful Thinking tee is cute, and you won’t be totally lame at this year’s party with black pants and a witches hat to fancy it up a bit.

DIY Trolls Halloween Costume

Can’t Stop This Feeling by Justin Timberlake is a song that’s been on repeat in our home all summer. Now with the anticipation of the movie Trolls {in theaters November 4), the song is being played even louder while simultaneously having a dance party! We’re so excited about the movie. Jessica’s kids wanted to be Poppy and Branch, two characters from the movie Trolls. Today she’s telling us how she made one Poppy costume and two Branch no-sew DIY Halloween costumes. You still have one week to make this costume before Halloween – you can do it!

Materials:

Felt, 23 green sheets {about .25 cents each), 1 light green sheet, 3 white sheets
White acrylic paint, Plaid Crafts
Peel-n-Stick permanent fabric fuse tape {this worked well for me, but Hello Wonderful made amazing felt costumes with a hot glue gun, so that’s an option, too}
khaki pants, cut like shorts
Turquoise sweatshirt, Wal-Mart
Pink pants and long sleeve shirt, Wal-Mart
Pink glitter boots, The Children’s Place
Grey long underwear, Costco
Troll wigs, Wal-Mart or Amazon
Black spray paint
Vests, Carters
Velcro
Faux flowers
Scissors {good for fabric}

Directions:

Branch Costume

Cut out felt leaves. I used a leaf cut out as my template, and then I cut, cut and cut some more.

Add Peel-n-Stick to the back of the leaves, and begin to layer the leaves on the vest, from the bottom-up.

Cut the khaki pants to be shorts.

Cut green felt squares and rectangles to place on shorts to look like patches.

For Branch, I needed a black wig, but couldn’t find one, so I spray painted a purple wig black.

The grey clothes underneath not only keep the kids warm, but it’s the color of the Trolls skin. Win-win!

Poppy Costume

Cut the sleeves off a turquoise sweatshirt. I used the Peel-n-Stick tape to ‘hem’ the cut seams.

Cut petals with white felt. I used a cut-out petal, similar to the leaf vest process. Add Peel-n-Stick to the back of the petals and add the petals to the bottom of the dress to match Poppy’s design.

Paint the bottom of Poppy’s dress to look like the real thing. I free-handed the design on the bottom.

Use scraps from the sweatshirt sleeves to make Poppy’s headband. I used the Peel-n-Stick tape to make the headband edges more seamless.

Paint faux flowers turquoise and hot glue them to the headband. Cut small felt petals to glue behind the flowers.

Poppy’s dress has a little wrap around the neck, so I used the hood of the sweatshirt to wrap around the neck. To keep it in place, I added a small strip of velcro to the hood and sweatshirt.
