stars and stripes detail

I love the look of the vintage American-inspired picnic table above. I’m a sucker for all things worn and antique-looking, so I want to take a seat on that picnic bench right now, and then bring it home with me. Authentic. Simple. Love it.

Below are some ideas to add that extra special detail of red, white and blue to your party.

DIY Vase with Patriotic Ribbon, Good Housekeeping

 I love all-white flowers, especially hydrangea. This standard glass vase gets a stars and stripes facelift with simple ribbon…a diy project that will be sure to get noticed. Just measure the vase’s circumference, then cut lengths of patriotic ribbon to size. Attach with double-sided tape to cover the vase.

Patriotic Table Runner, Good Housekeeping

This crepe paper runner {aka streamers} can be made in minutes. Cover a table with a white paper tablecloth. Cut lengths of blue and red crepe paper to the lengths of the cloth. Weave the colors, as shown. To keep the runner in place, use double-sided tape on the edges.

 Star Medallion, Martha Stewart

Make these fabric medallions and hang from your porch, above your table or as a backdrop to a dessert table. Adorable. For directions, go here.

Nautical Napkin Rings, Martha Stewart

1. Bind 96 inches of off-white cord at 12-inch intervals with clear adhesive tape. Snip through tape and cord to create 8 lengths. Thread each length through a boat snap {Boat snaps, also known as eye snaps, can be found at boating-supply shops}.
2. Loop cord, aligning ends on a 2-inch piece of 3/4-inch-wide off-white twill tape smeared with white or fabric glue.
3. Pinch sides of cord together to create 2 smaller loops, securing with tape.

Lanterns on a String {Ribbon}, Hostess with the Mostess

DIY Fabric Flower, Celebrations at Home

I love this flower idea. It can be added to any basket, box or bucket. It’s that little extra something that makes the presentation special.

You’ll Need
Strips of fabric cut to size with pinking shears
A button
Needle & thread

How To
Begin layering your strips of fabric in criss-cross patterns until you have a full circle.
Then place your button in the center and sew a few stitches through it and the fabric to keep it all together.
Apply the ‘flower’ using glue dots

Cheesecake in a Jar, My Baking Addiction

recipes yields 4-6 servings depending on size of jars used

Ingredients
½ cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
zest of one lemon
2 packages cream cheese, 8 oz each; room temperature
2 large eggs; room temperature
¼ cup heavy cream
1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Topping
1 cup fresh berries

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Begin to boil a large pot of water for the water bath.
3. In the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with your paddle attachment, combine the sugar and lemon zest and mix until the sugar is moistened and fragrant. Add in the cream cheese and cream together until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, fully incorporating each before adding the next. Make sure to scrape down the bowl in between each egg. Add heavy cream and vanilla and mix until smooth.
4. Pour batter into canning jars until about ¾ of the way full. Place jars into a larger pan and pour boiling water into the larger pan until halfway up the sides of the jars.
5. Bake 25 to 30 minutes, the edges will appear to be set, but the center will still have a little jiggle to it.
6. Carefully remove the cheesecake jars from the water bath and place on a cooling rack to cool completely. Once the cheesecakes are completely cooled, place them into the refrigerator for at least 5 hours. Top will fresh berries and serve.

Notes:
1. If you are missing the graham cracker crust, serve with graham sticks.
2. The jars pictured above are Weck (7.4 ounce) Tulip Jars.

ride your bike to wedding day

Happy Wedding Wednesday!

Even though I drove my car to work today the air conditioning on full blast, today is Bike to Work Day in Denver! I give all of you props who rode your bike to work today in this 90 degrees weather… I definitely decided to pass up that opportunity 🙂

And so today, I was inspired to see how bikes can be used as accessories at weddings. These photos are just too fun!

boyfriend blazer bombshell

Happy Fashion Friday!

OK, so at first I was not such a fan of this trend (I have to be honest) but now I am just crazy for the oversize boyfriend blazer! This trend can find at all price points and I think great in the spring and summer for that sheek, stylish career woman. First of all, blazers automatically make a girl look professional and well put-together, but are also comfortable and not restricting. Look classic (with a stylish twist) and presentable no matter what body type, age … and sex, male or female!

Now you don’t just want to literally raid your significant others’ closet. Although this blazer is inspired by those hunky men in our lives, you want your “feminine” boyfriend blazer to be well fitted and tailored. Great to wear with a casual t-shirt or silk camisole, suit pants, jeans, summer shorts, or leggings and heels to dress it up. Wear your cute boyfriend blazer outfit to work during day, or dress it up and make it more edgy for a night on the town.

You can find great boyfriend blazers at Nordstrom and J. Crew, among many other retailers … and from what I found, prices range from $29 to over $600.

DIY photo lantern

photo lantern

One of my fave DIY projects has made an appearance several times on this blog…diy photo lanterns. I’ve made them for a several parties, and people continue to make comments about how much they love them. So, I’m going to keep a good thing going and attempt to share my how-to instructions to make this easy, affordable DIY project that will impress your guests with their personal touch and warm, soft glow…and have you looking like a little Ms. Martha Stewart.

You’ll Need:
black and white vertical photos
vellum paper
lanterns {I bought mine from Pier 1, but have seen adorable lanterns at Pottery Barn Home Décor too}
double-sided tape
scissors
candle {real or fake will work}

How To:
Measure the openings on the lantern where the photos will be placed
Edit black and white photos on a computer program to the exact size of the lantern openings {I just used Microsoft Word to adjust the size accordingly}
Print the photos on vellum paper on a laserjet printer
NOTE: An ink jet printer does not work as well because the ink is too wet once printed on the vellum
If needed, cut the photos and adjust them accordingly
Place a small piece of double-sided tape on the corners of the lantern opening
Place the photo on the glass and press gently on all sides and corners
Put a candle inside the lantern and light it before party guests arrive
voila

{p.s. this makes a great gift for your mother or mother-in-law with photos of the grandkids, or a bride with engagement photos}
