Personalized Book Giveaway and DIY Kite Easter Eggs

We are flying high with today’s post. Literally, we are as high as a kite in the sky! We love our newest DIY Kite Easter Eggs, and they were inspired by an I See Me! book, My Little Book of Blessings. We have always loved I See Me! products, and they remain one of our favorite newborn gifts. Recently we opened up the blessings book and found the graphics to be magical, and the words to be meaningful. A book that teaches children the golden rule, the importance of friendship and how to lend a helping hand is a book we want on our bookshelves. Plus, every page is customized with a child’s name, and a special note and photo on the front and back pages.

The page about friendship has kite illustrations, and thus our DIY easter eggs were born. Please keep reading for a tutorial on the eggs, as well as a giveaway for a I See Me! book of your choice, just in time for Easter. The books are amazing, and the gift of reading is priceless.

Materials:

White wood or paper mache eggs
Sharpie markers
Pencil
embroidery string
hot glue gun and hot glue, Michaels
card stock paper, Astrobrights

Directions:

Draw the kite designs with a pencil. If you mess up, you can erase it. We used free-hand to draw our designs.

Outline the egg with a thin black Sharpie marker. Once the design is outlined, erase any pencil marks that remain on the egg.

Begin to color inside the lines with Sharpie colorful markers. Continue until all kites are brightly colored.

To begin to make the kite tails, cut strands of embroidery string and cut mini bows from the card stock. You can find a template for mini bows online.

Add glue to one side of the bow, and quickly place the string in the middle, and then cover with another bow.

Once all the bows are in place, dab a tiny amount of glue to the bottom of the kite, and press the end of the string down on the glue.

Poke the Rainbow Activity for Kids on St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is a favorite among adults to raise a glass with Guinness or Jameson in hand. For kids, it’s all about the leprechaun, a colorful rainbow, wearing green and the gold. We made an easy, fun and non-candy Poke-the-Rainbow activity for kids on St. Patrick’s Day.

The rules of the game are simple. Each child takes a turn to pick one cup to poke through. Once the leprechaun is found, everyone can reach for the gold. The best part…everyone walks away with a treat. Who will be the first to poke the cup with the leprechaun?

Important side note: this game could be really fun and adult-friendly with each cup filled with a mini shot of Irish liquor. Cheers!

Materials:

plastic cups {white}
napkins in every color of the rainbow
pot and gold coins
white tissue paper
mini leprechaun or photo of leprechaun
non-candy gifts such as bead necklaces, buttons, bracelets
rubber bands
foam core board, white
hot glue gun and glue
stickers, shamrock cut-outs

Directions:

Randomly place the non-candy items in the cups. Pick one special cups for the leprechaun.

Cover each cup with a napkin, and wrap a rubber band around the top.

Once all the cups have colors, arrange in a rainbow-like pattern on a foam core board, and glue all of them in place. Glue the bottom of the cups so the top of the cup is facing outward.

Make white tissue paper clouds, and glue them on the end{s} of the rainbow.

Write, stencil, glue or stick letters on the foam board for simple directions.

Set up in the classroom {this will be a hit if you’re in charge of this year’s classroom party} , or at your St. Patrick’s Day celebration, and make sure the pot of gold is under the rainbow.

You’re My Jam, Valentine

This Valentine idea is a non-candy, peanut, gluten, and dairy-free option. Hooray. Plus, it’s fun, gender-neutral, and it’s got rhythm. Jessica’s son loves music, so he wanted to share some of his faves with his friends this Valentine’s Day. Not many classics made his list – Everything is Awesome, I like to Move It and I’m in Love with a Monster made his top 3.

Jenna had a good point when she asked if anyone actually uses CDs anymore; however, our kids still listen to CDs in the car. So, with some leftover CDs, colorful paper from Astrobrights, a camera and computer, we went to work.

Materials:

Astrobrights Papers
CDs
Camera
Headphones
PicMonkey

Directions:

Take a photo of your child with headphones. This part was fun. Edit the photo with the free and amazing editing software, PicMonkey. We made the image into a circle in this software, and added the words, You’re My Jam. Print and cut the photos.

Burn the CDs.

Make DIY cd sleeves with paper by following this tutorial. It’s super easy, y’all {we didn’t use the template – just looked at the photos}.

Insert the CD into the sleeve, close and glue the photo of your child onto the CD holder.

Valentine’s Day Party for Kids

This Valentine’s Day party is simple, and a bright dose of yellow sunshine in the middle of a snowy, cold winter. It’s just what we needed, and it’s just what our kids needed to celebrate love this Valentine’s Day. Love comes in all shapes and forms, and we try to teach and show them what love means everyday. Love for themselves and love for others.

As you know, it’s wonderful when the sibling bickering subsides and they can hug, kiss and play with one another. We captured it on camera, so next time they are fighting, we can remind them how much they love each other.

Banana’s For You stemmed from a recent find similar to those Silly Bandz we were obsessed with in 2010. The tiny banana bracelets are going to be our kids Valentine’s this year, but we wanted to have a little extra fun at home, too. It was an everything banana party, including the color yellow, banana ice cream, banana cut-out details, and banana bracelets.

Materials:

Astrobrights Paper, yellow and pink
yellow washi tape
Mustard Smoothie Bands, banana
X-acto knife
Double-sided tape
bowls or ice cream pint containers
Sharpie marker, black
Silhouette America electronic cutting machine

Directions:

Cut out the letters for Banana’s For You. We used our amazing Silhouette to cut out the letters, bananas, hearts and arrows.

Find a wall and use washi tape to hang the letter and bananas.

For the placemats, trace a banana on yellow paper with a black sharpie. Fill in the ends and lines in the middle with black marker. Use an X-acto knife to cut the side of the top-half of the banana and the line down the middle, half-way down. This will be the ‘peel’ effect. Place double-sided tape on all 4 corners and tape to a sheet of pink paper. Draw the name of the child on the pink paper under the banana peel, and add the words PEEL ME on top of the banana peel.

Glue or tape the small bananas and mini hearts on the lid of the pint container.

Make banana ice cream. Follow this recipe. It’s amazing – frozen banana’s blended in a food processor literally makes ice cream.
Fill a bowl with yummy toppings so the kids can their chocolate fix.

Serve and par-tay.

DIY NYE Ball Drop with Cheese Balls

If anyone under the age of 12 made the RSVP list for your NYE party, we have a must-do, last-minute DIY New Year’s Eve Ball Drop for you. Heck, even if kids didn’t make the list, adults will love this DIY Ball Drop, too.

It’s made with cheese, so it’s edible and good, plus it’s easy, which means you can do it in under an hour. It’s not healthy, per say, but it is gluten free, so even the gf folk can enjoy.

Here’s how to make a DIY New Year’s Eve Ball Drop with Cheese Balls.

Materials:

Cheese balls {$6 at Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club or Target}
Styrofoam ball
Foil
250-300 toothpicks
2016 candles or cut out letters glued to a toothpick
Martini glass or a wood stick with a base

Directions

Cover the Styrofoam ball completely with foil.
Insert toothpicks ¾ deep in the foil, and press a cheese ball onto the end of the toothpick. Do this until the ball is full, or if you plan to place on a martini glass, you can leave the bottom tip empty. The other cool option is to cover the ball completely, insert it onto a wood stick or dowel rod and lower it every hour like the real thing.
Save some room at the top of the ball for the 2016 candles or letters. If you need more room, just remove some cheese balls.

Happy New Year, everyone! 2015 started out rough for us, and it seemed to stay rough most the way through, so 2016, we have high hopes for you. No one sang it better than our dear friend Dana, but Frank Sinatra started it all, and we’re going to sing it and believe it in 2016…
