DIY Graduation Gift: Interview in a Box

It’s Graduation time. It’s time a quarter life crisis may be imminent. It’s time to navigate the real world. It’s time to find a JOB. It’s time to move back in with mom and dad, or pay your own rent. It’s time to ponder if that major that seemed like a good idea at the time may have, in fact, been a waste of time. It’s time to show the real world what you can do!

With our cute new file folder, we created an affordable and unique DIY Graduation gift idea we think every graduate needs this year…Interview in a Box.

We know our knees buckled with nervousness before every interview and our parents always had the best advice. Just be yourself and do your best. So, with a little wisdom from mom and dad, and a few essentials from Interview in a Box, your interview will be a smashing success.

Interview in a Box

What’s included for the new graduate:

DIY brushstroke file folder. Don’t bring this to the interview. Keep it at home, and get organized.
Water bottle. Stay hydrated. No one wants cotton breath.
Breath mints. Don’t make the interviewer turn his head with a queasy stomach with your morning coffee breath.
Notepad and pens {Target, $3}. Be smart and take notes. At least look like you’re listening.
Nordstrom gift card. Dress to impress. Cut off jeans and your college sorority sweatshirt is not going cut it. Go shopping and get something that will help you feel confident, professional and classy. You can never go wrong with a shopping spree at Nordstrom, period.
File folders {Target}. Your resume will stand out in a metallic folder with your name on it. If you shine, your resume should too.
Starbucks VIA. Stay awake for the interview, and since you’re post-college, you’re broke. No fancy latte’s for you.
You Got This banner {via our awesome Silhouette cutting machine}. You worked your butt off to graduate from school. Never forget that you’re a boss babe {or dude}, and believe in yourself. YOU GOT THIS. Hang the banner in your room before and after the interview for a personal pep talk.
Thank you cards. You will get extra points for writing a hand-written thank you note post interview. No texting, please.

DIY Citrus Fruit Pushpins

In the summer we plan to take our Friday nights with a lick of salt, a slice of lime and a shot of tequila. The thought makes our lips pucker with excitement.

So, why not take our cork boards with a hint of color, a slice of lime and a cute photo?

Our classic black and white pushpins recently got a makeover into DIY lemon and lime pushpins. The mini slices add cheer to our workspace, and keep us dreaming of our favorite Rio Grande margaritas.

Materials Needed:

Mini Cork Door Discs {with adhesive backing} from Home Depot. You can also use flat white pushpins {non-cork}.
Acrylic paint {white, lime green, yellow}
Pushpins
Pencil
Sealer, such as Shellac

Directions:

Paint the mini cork discs white.
When the white paint dries, use a pencil to freehand mini triangles in a circle around the center of the disc.
Paint the outer ring green/yellow, then paint the triangles green/yellow.
Once the paint dries, spray paint with a sealer, like Shellac.
Stick to the pushpins. The adhesive on the back should be sufficient, but if not, a hot glue gun with work.

We couldn’t agree more, Robin. Nature is alive again. The warmth of the sun, and buds in the trees is rejuvenating for the soul. We’re so happy Spring is here – seriously, we would hug it if we could.

Naturally, we’ve got flowers on our mind…and hopefully on our walls soon with all these amazing floral wall decoration ideas.

10 Creative Ways to Decorate the Wall with Flowers

1. Antler and Flower Wall Art: We’re still obsessed with all the deer heads popping up on walls, so the combo of deer heads, bright colors and fresh floral has us swooning. {via Wedding Chicks}

2. Paper Flower Wall: We heard Oh Joy! speak at Alt, and immediately loved her. She was a wonderful speaker, and she is insanely talented. Look at that DIY paper wall art. {via Oh Joy!}

3. Girl’s Room Decor: We are smitten with the paper flowers, teepee and gold pouf in this room! One lucky little lady calls this place home, and she’s most definitely a chic princess. {via honey & fitz}

4. Floral Monogram: With a little Modge Podge and a gorgeous floral print, you can create a pretty floral monogram. This would look great on the wall, and it would make a fabulous gift. {via Homey Oh My}

5. DIY Fresh Flower Wall: Buy some fresh stems from your local florist and hang the stems with washi tape. You can do this on a small-scale, or a large one. And, if you want it to last longer, buy fake stems. {via Green Wedding Shoes}

DIY Watercolor Mug and Planter

This photo hooked me.

The idea was brilliant. The cost was minimal. The ingredients were already in a drawer upstairs. The impact was bold. Within 10 minutes of seeing the photos, Jessica and her daughter were dipping mugs in their favorite nail polish colors.

Instead of using it as a mug, Gabriella opted for a succulent planter. And, with that, she is the proud 4-year-old owner of this adorable, trendy succulent planter!

Warning: this looks easy, and it is; however the nail polish is totally fickle and it took us several tries to get it right {we dipped dispensable products just to see how it worked}. And, the nail polish hardens almost immediately, so you have to drop and dip – quick, quick, quick!

You’ll Need:

White ceramic mug. You can find them for $1 at Wal-mart
Deep container you want to throw away or use for paint only
Nail Polish
Warm Water
Gold Leaf Paint
Pink Aquarium rocks
Succulent
Dirt and Rocks

How to Make It:

Fill the bowl with warm water.
Add a drop of nail polish to the water, and it should spread. You can use a toothpick to help create a ‘swirl’ your looking for. For us, sometimes the nail polish spread like it was supposed to, and other times, the drop sank to the bottom of the bowl. It’s hit or miss.
If you want to use an additional color, drain the water, and repeat the steps.
If you mess up, or there’s s spot you don’t like, just use a cotton swab or pad soaked with Nail Polish remover to remove the nail polish from the mug.
Pat dry with a paper towel and let dry for 2 hours.
If you want a gold handle, add painter’s tape on the mug around the handle, and paint the handle gold with Gold Leaf Paint.

To make the mug a planter, add dirt and rocks to the cup, insert the succulent and top it off with pink rocks.

St. Patrick’s Day in a Box

One of our favorites from Alt was Gilit Cooper, lead boss babe at Shoes Off Please and owner of The Bannerie. She recently hosted a Wayfair Homemakers Housewarming Party. Among the many fabulous ideas, our GF mini cheesecakes with Bailey’s Irish Cream made the roundup. Get your lucky on and see all the colorful ideas. If a cookie topped with a rainbow of fruit meets your fancy, you’ll love this.

In other St. Patrick’s Day news, we made a St. Patrick’s Day in a Box. I know, it’s semi-lame with no Guinness, Jameson or car bombs, but our husbands will take care of all that for us. We will enjoy our evening wearing tall rainbow socks, sipping on Bailey’s Irish Cream with a green and white striped straw, of course, and a DIY Slainte {an Irish Gaelic word often said during a toast, which translates as ‘good health’} in the background.

For the banner, all you need is felt, Elmer’s Craft Glue or Beacon Felt Glue, a clover to trace, pom poms, a wood dowel rod and yarn. Cut, glue and hang.
